Jamboree
Overall, I was pleased with the JV and Varsity execution of the DBs and it would appear we are making progress. The following are clips I particularly enjoyed....
Play:
- Fundamentally flawless hit and support from (Jr) #31 K.Pitre, who has really been impressive since Spring and in the weight room. Though not a flashy back, he is as solid of a contributor as we have on the team.
- (Sr) #24 D.Thompson whom we have made the most progress with since Spring has a decent breakup to end a drive / quarter.
- An aggressive breakup of a stick/spot route off of jet motion by our (Sr) #5 FS J.Fobbs. This play here helped eliminate this 'money' play for this offense. Considerable time was spent in practice recognizing the nuances of stems to see this develop
- Not a great play as the Dig is wide open, but it highlights the dramatic improvement of #24 who lays a WOO! lick on the backside Post. This player was not known for his ability to be physical or 'tough' in the Spring, and to his credit, has come a long way in asserting his presence on the field. See the knockout he delivers backside in last week's opening clip.
- Another eye-gouging gain on the defense as the QB keep gains big, I was pleased with the CB leverage in support and both corners making sure tackles here.
- This is a great example (and improvement for this player) of (Sr) #1 C.Willis working his support leverage, escape on the stalk, and textbook tackle.
- Against the Post/Curl, #24 breaks on the post after reading quarterback.
- Same as #5 above, fundamentally sound leverage of support by the corners and no pussified/cocksucker tackles.
- JV player (Jr) #82 T.Williams at FS breaks up the weak seam against 5 verticals. This is an eager player who is pressing for more Varsity time and has been eating up the handouts and understanding his role in coverage.
- JV player (Jr) #30 K.Thomas at corner, keeps a disciplined slide, solid break on the hitch, perfect leverage of the ball carrier, and a sure tackle. This player has made considerable strides in the last three weeks to be recognized and has been diligent to work his fundamentals. This once timid, unconfident, and soft player is finding the joy of football (via technique and fundamentals).
I look forward to our matchup this week against a Texas powerhouse, and am gearing up to have a solid rotation of 7 different defensive backs in the game to contribute.
In other news....
After our jamboree, no joke, an assistant chimes up, "Coach, have you ever thought of running VEER out of empty?!"
(HolyS*#t silence)
Our JV TE kept lining up incorrectly on the wrong side, causing illegal formations (making the X think he should back off the LOS). Play after play, "I-Right" is called, and this player continued to break the huddle and line up on the left. When confronting the player after the series, the OC looks down and sees the player wearing 2 right-footed cleats....
Only had one off-sides penalty called on our defense all night. After a hard cadence, no one on the D even flinches.......except for our DEAF NOSE GUARD!

Joleon Lescott First appearance in Manchester City Outfit
Notes on Compartmentalizing in Coaching
Coaching the Details
Comprehensive Skill Sheet (for player metrics)
It is one thing to say what to do, but defining the limits of that responsibility is just as valuable.
We call this, WIN (What's Important Now).
W.I.N.
What is the most important thing for a specific position? What is the one thing that could make (this position) look bad? What's
Important
Now
The bubble LBs main job, his immediate threat is Iso. He should look for (expect) that FIRST on any play with 2-backs
And more importantly, what is NOT important.
A cover 3 corner really has no concern on immediate run (support), so throwing that into his logic-string on play keys is only going to slow him down.
Most of the time there is typically only 3 things a position really needs to worry about vs certain formations (understanding his role at a particular time).
Eliminate the fluff be elucidating the only thing that matters ("you can only be threatened by lead iso F on an inside angle") and nothing else matters until this threat is clearly eliminated. This creates a binary logic algorithym - very clear metrics on what is important (based on eliminating everything that isn't).
Ever see "Platoon" and Willem DaFoe's character starts stripping Charlie Sheen's character of superflous gear?
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
This comes by compartmentalizing the field with dividers for DBs, gap control based on back alignment with LBs, etc......reduce the amount of elements that a player can be forced to hesitate over.
Most textbook drills exist in a vaccuum environment with no context. They may enforce hip leverage but not ball leverage/fits. With linebackers, for example, you have to set the parameters of the scrape,"Here is 'power', on THIS key, you should push off the outside foot to shuffle twice into opposite B gap" (rather than just chase ball).
He should be in position (not out of his AO) and be ready for tackle or spilling.
I would look into the efficiency of the teaching methods and that the drills they are doing have real-world/ contextual applications. A kid may be a world beater in a drill, but have no idea how to apply that skill set to what he sees on the field.
How consistent is the "next play" concept with what (skill sets) you have already built. If a new defense has no connection with what was previously ran, the kids will be lost (ie; C3 is just like C1, except......C3 is just like C2, except.....)
I want to say that most of this stuff, I have personally outlined (for myself) and it is the 3 articles on my sitekreator page (spells out the how's and why's of what I have done)
North vs South Redux (Big Ten Image Problem)
The author showers the article with pertinent facts and statistics that support this case, and specifically ties the precipitating factor to athletic and explosive defensive linemen.

Unfortunately, I do not see the article available online (otherwise I'd link it), but it is available int he 2009 Lindy's College Football Preview magazine (who reads these anymore?). I really don't have any regard for sports writers and the hollow dogshit regurgitated sports cliches they attempt to provide (they call "analysis"), but this article in particular offered a rather cogent argument with supporting findings.
Nuggets worth repeating;
- Big Ten's bowl record over the past 6years is 15-28 (Big Ten was 1-6 in the 2008 post season)
- OSU has won 4 consecutive Big Ten Titles, but hasn't won a bowl game since 2005.
- Texas, LSU, and USC combined to have 7 defensive linemen drafted in the 2009. 5 were drafted from the entire Big Ten.
- In 2008, only 4 defensive linemen in the Big Ten were drafted
- Since 2004, 16 defensive tackles were drafted in the 1st round in the NFL. None has come from the Big Ten.
- The last Big Ten defensive tackle to be drafted in the 1st round was perennial turd, Jimmy Kennedy in 2003 (Penn State).
"Defensive tackle play is a battle of hands, and so many young high school guys have no clue how to use their hands as a defensive lineman, particularly a defensive tackle." - Tim Brewster, Minnesota Head Coach
Here's to looking forward to USC again dismantling the hype-machine known as OSU in the coming weeks. Tune in to Trojan Football Analysis for his breakdown of this matchup.

No going back
I'm a realist (well almost).. i'm never gona make a pro... i'm never gonna carve a living with my legs... but i enjoy my cycling... no matter how bad a mood i am in with life i know that a few pedal turns i'll be feeling back on top of the world.
This is pretty mch the only thing i have ever shown any promise in... i would like to think i am a better than average rider.. on a good day i can ride at the front in a race and usually see the top ten but the draw of the podium although desireable isn't what is motivating me at the moment.
Well anyway i came up with an off the cuff remark to Grace that i wanna ride the coldest, hottest and highest mountain bike races in the world... in the same year.. on a singlespeed.. and she agreed if thats what i wanted.
I live to a rule generally in life that came from my bmx days at university.. if you call something out you got to do it... i've called this now and my body is gonna have to endure the workload my brain has scheduled it.
So the first is the coldest...a bit of research showed that the Arrowhead 135 Ultra in Minnesota can see a trail temperature of -60 farenheit.. so i've entered and it looks like my entry on the basis of previous lunacy whilst in charge of a bike has been accepted.
No going back... i've called it... so now i got to man up and do it.. if i said i wasn't scared i'd be lying... if i said i was excited it would be an understatement.

HR Bill 3200 Health Care
This is a summary / analysis provided by a practicing NWLA doctor whom I happen to respect
HR 3200 Summary Title I
(http://sitekreator.com/brophyfootball9/main.html)
It is at least an honest assesment with what doesn't appear to be much bias (or feear-mongering hyperbole)
Being that the two things you shouldn't discuss is religion and politics, I figure I owe (politics) folks equal time for abuse
UPDATE 2:
http://0304.netclime.net/1_5/000/000/909/8dc/HR%203200%20title%201%20Summary.pdf
I have completed my review of Title II of H.R. 3200. Only 30 hours over 2 weeks to do so:) I really hope you all are reading my summary, because it really has been enlightening for me. Lot's of good stuff in this bill! Please share it with others if you agree.
The review has condensed two Titles, and several hundred pages into only 20. Title II was WAY more interesting and complex than Title I, in my opinion. If you got my first email, you can skip straight to Title II, though I did revise the first one just a bit and standardize my format, and I found that I understand it better after re-reading my summary.
UPDATE 3:
http://0304.netclime.net/1_5/000/000/91a/57f/HR_203200_20Summary.pdf
Time for my third installment...Title 3 of HR3200. It was long, but it abbreviated fairly short. For those of you who got my prior summaries of Title 1 and 2, it starts on page 23 of 28 if you want to skip right to it. I was a bit diheartened to discover that I have only made it through 160 pages of the 1016 page bill after 38 hours! I'm afraid I won't make it through it all, but I do want to at least get through Title 4, so at
least one more installment coming.
I did change some sections due to a better understanding or different opinion as I read further into the bill, and I marked them with red beside the section title if you want to reread them.

Violence at West Ham v Millwall match
Following this on Sky Sports news like everyone else. Apparently there's been lots of trouble outside the stadium resulting in at least one stabbing. West Ham currently leading 3-1 but the fans invaded the pitch after their second goal postponing play for a while. This is a disgrace and a kick in the teeth for all us genuine fans who do our best not to live up to the reputation of English fans and try to enjoy our game in a fun but not intimidating way. Regardless of the result, boot both clubs out of the competition and dock them some points. The football league can't dock little clubs like Chester huge numbers of points for financial problems and leave appalling behaviour like this from the bigger clubs unpunished.
Sol Campbell joins Notts County
Imagine the reaction of the bookie if you'd placed a bet a few months ago that Sven would end up at Notts County. Imagine his laughter if you'd gone on to do an accumulator with Sol Campbell. Well, if you have the gift of second sight you'll be counting your piles of money right now, as it has been confirmed today that the former England, Spurs, Arsenal and Pompey defender has gone on a free to the second division club.Although big Sol hasn't been part of the England set-up since Capello took the helm, and although at 35 he is in the twilight of his career, Campbell is far from a desperate ageing star. Harry Redknapp has stated that he would have signed him for Spurs, if the fans their did not still harbour such a hatred for him after his move to Arsenal in 2001 (get over it Lilywhites ... footballers are allowed to change jobs just like the rest of us). Campbell confirmed that he'd had offers from Premiership clubs but chose the Notts County gig as it would keep him playing first team football for hopefully another 3 years and was a very interesting challenge for him to help take Notts County to the Premiership in this period.
Another of Campbell's former bosses, Arsene Wenger, has also sung the big defender's praises, but in typical Wenger style also added a note of caution; namely that Campbell would find the conditions in League 2 very different and might struggle mentally. Campbell has of course had problems in the past in this area, but hopefully it will be challenges of a more physical nature that will be the hardest to overcome, for example the pitches!!
Since Sven arrived at Notts County, rumours have been rife. Beckham has even been linked with the club!! It is however fascinating to see how what must be a fairytale for Notts County fans is unravelling - two weeks ago Schmeichel Junior arrived at the club and almost certainly Sven will have other surprises up his sleeve. It makes for great 5 live debates and blogging, so you have to wish the club (and Sol) luck.
Is Liverpool's title challenge over?
Liverpool's run of 31 unbeaten matches at home was abruptly ended last night, with an impressive defensive display from Aston Villa and a lacklustre performance from Liverpool resulting in a 1:3 defeat. Although the Scousers beat Stoke mid-week, their defeat to Spurs in the opening match of the season means they have lost the same amount of matches in 2 weeks as they did in the whole of last season. Liverpool are therefore six points behind early leaders Tottenham and Chelsea, who have won all three of their matches, while Arsenal and Manchester City hold 100% winning records with a game in hand on the leaders. It will be of small comfort to Liverpool fans that Manchester United have six points from three games, having lost to newly promoted Burnley last week.Liverpool fans must be worried that the gap left by Alonso is proving significant, particularly as the intended replacement Alberto Aquilani is injured. Benitez has not been given the money to be anything like as active in the transfer market as 2 of the clubs currently ahead of Liverpool in the table (Man City and Spurs). The only remaining members of the victorious champions league squad are Gerrard, whose talisman status has taken a battering after giving away a penalty last night, and Carragher. Whether the rest of the sqaud have the quality to hold their own against the likes of Man U and Arsenal os yet to be seen, but the evidence so far this season is not promising. It would definitely be a great boost to the Anfield as well as the squad if Benitez could complete a big name signing before the end of the transfer window.
Clearly however anyone sensible will know that it is entirely possible to lose 2 matches and win the title race. The current holders, Man United, lost 4 matches in the 2008-9 season and 5 matches in the 2007-8 season. Suggesting that Benitez' men have no chance of winning their first league title in over 20 years is definitely premature, even if it does lessen the pain for Everton fans of being at the bottom of the table after some shocking performances.
So in answer to whether Liverpool's title challenge is over, I'd say not, but you'll get good odds right now! Plus if you know any reds, then it's a great line to wind them up!
Liverpool FC smashed by Aston Villa 3-1 | Gerald's Fouls gave Villa Penalty
Believe the hype........(movie recommendation)
In any event, "Inglourious Basterds" (nice excuse to use this word loudly in public) is a pretty awesome movie that you ought to go see.
This is the movie that "The Dirty Dozen" wanted to grow up to be but failed because it suffered from bed wetting and being picked on in school for smelling like pee. It has enough grit and edge to keep you excited, with just enough levity to relax and enjoy.
The movie is driven by a dialogue-rich, quad-linguist antagonist, Christopher Waltz (though without the depth of say, "Deadwood"). Although relentlessly sinister, his witty retorts and meticulous logic draws the viewer in to connect with him. Being a multi-linguist myself (fluent in engrish, ass-kickery, and bullshit), I couldn't help but find this character as the reckoning focal point in the movie.
This historically accurate piece of pivotal 20th Century events, fleshes out the details of what caused the end of WWII and the Third Reich. This film will likely be a standard for high school history classes for generations to come.
The movie opens as the German Aryan Nation advances through Eastern Europe at the cusp of American involvement into this combat theatre. With civilization on the brink of collapse to Hitler's advancement of a consuming Rheinland ideology headed by Wagner and FOX News, the fate of the world lays in the hands of 7 Jews and an Appalachian hillbilly. What ensues next is an orgasmic diarrhea of violence and interlocution. Hang on to your popcorn!
Though clearly violent enough to satiate the blood lust of today's audiences, it isn't quite on par with the intensity of recent classics as "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country For Old Men", this movie holds its own and is truly the crown in cinematic fare for 2009.
Clearly fans of 42 Nickel
