Emmanuel Adebayor link AC MILAN

Arsenal striker linked with AC Milan

Arsenal upfront man Emmanuel Adebayor has been linked with a move to the San Siro with AC Milan continuing their unsuccessful chase from last year. If AC don't secure the signing of Wolfburg's Edin Dzeko they will go in for Adebayor....

Franck Ribery : Chelsea will bid 59 million Euros

According to a report in the Sunday Express, Bayern Munich will be offered 59 million Euros by Chelsea for their star winger Franck Ribery. Ribery has been linked with other big clubs including Manchester United.

Samuel Eto'o targeted by Manchester City

Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o has been targeted by Mark Hughes and Manchester City with a bid that both selling club and player are looking to exploit because of Man City's wealth.

Eto'o reportedly will sign if he gets £200,000 a week after tax (!) with Manchester City looking at a level of £140k-£180k (apparently a similar package will be offered to Carlos Tevez this week).

In terms of the actual transfer level, Man City have reportedly offered £25m - Barcelona are demanding £40m....and who could blame them....they are in talks with trillionaires!

Good business for both teams? Barcelona definitely, and yes Samuel Eto'o would go some way to their campaign to push for European football next season. If you've got transfer funds you might as well spend it and Samuel Eto'o is quality.

Eto'o, Robinho and Tevez could be an awesome strike force for City.

Glen Johnson signs with Liverpool for £17.5m

England full back Glen Johnson has left financial strugglers Portsmouth to join Liverpool for £17.5m. This is Benitez's first signing of the summer and despite paying heavily this is a great signing for the long term as Glen Johnson is only 24 and has a great future ahead of him.

Johnson was well rated at Chelsea and has continued to impress within the Premier League for Pompey and in the World Cup qualifiying matches for his national team. This signing could help to get other transfer activity moving as Arbeloa has been linked with big spenders Real Madrid who are looking at buying the full back for £8m.

United States beat Spain

United States beat Spain
United States set date to play against the winner of semi-final match between Brazil and South Africa after beating Spain 2-0.United States made a miracle appearance to semi-final stage after beating Africa champions, Egypt 3-0, thanks to 3-0 Brazil win against Italy. Before beating Egypt, United States loss 3-1 to Italy and 3-0 to Brazil.

Two goals from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey on 27th and 74th minutes stopped Spain registering 36 games unbeaten record. Spain levelled a 35 world record of unbeaten run with Brazil after beating South Africa and achieved a world record of 15 consecutive wins.
The European Champions tried all the tricks but efforts from USA defenders and goalie, Tim Howard denied Spain top scorers, David Villa and Fernando Torres.

The 27th goal by Altidore was the first goal Spain concede since April 1st against Turkey, when Semih Senturk scored. Before this game, Spain last loss was in November 2006 against Romania.

Quotes
“Sometimes, football is a funny thing. Sometimes you get lucky on certain occasions and we definitely rode our luck against the best team in the world. They are unbelievable.” said Howard

"We made a special point to close down Xavi, trying to force him to play the ball square or behind him so that he couldn't play any of those penetrating passes he is so good at," Bradley said

"Regardless of whether we play Brazil or the Bafana Bafana, the challenge will be great," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said.
United States Beat Spain
"I think it just shows that we can compete with the best. Now we need to do it on a consistent basis," U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra said.

"This is an accident, a little step backward," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. "We have to look forward with optimism."

"This win is huge for American soccer," Dempsey said. "This one is much sweeter because we were down and out, came back fighting."

Setanta Sports goes pop

There are a few ways to view the Setant developments. After listening to a few radio phone ins, I got a little irritated with the view that Setenta Sports was an evil phenomenon that exploited the armchair football fan in a new way. Sky TV have been charing us for 17 years for 'sports packages' and Setanta had more depth than just the Monday nighters. US PGA Golf. IPL 20-20 cricket, SPL and boxing will all be missed.

So as suspected in my article in January about ESPN bidding for Premier League football rights, this huge Aerican media giant will now have a go to succeed where Setanta failed.

Yes I agree that raising season tickets and TV subscriptions is an ugly side of football for many football fans who just simply don't want to miss any action. However, such is the pull of the Barclays Premier League for players all over the world that we pay a premium for the best league in the world and I for one am happy to do that.

Heading Home....

Visiting the stomping ground in Iowa for the folks' 50th anniversary this weekend.

Wahoo!
....quiet down! Corn is growing...

This will cause me to miss the 101-103 degree day long tournament in Natchitoches..... darn it
If it is 97 now with a Heat Index of 117, I can't imagine what it will be like on the rubber turf of NSU at 102.

Good news....after calling around to three dozen or so local businesses, we finally picked up a tractor tire (free!) for the S&C program here. Maybe I'll need to bring some 'real' ones back from JD in the QC.

Liverpool Sign Glen Johnson

Liverpool has signed Johnson
Former Portsmouth and Chelsea defender have joined Liverpool FC for £17.5m. Johnson fantastic season with Portsmouth earned Capello’s call to England National team.
The 24-year-old England international, who was also targeted by former club , Chelsea, is well set to be a regular player in Capello’s squad.

Wenger signs Thomas Vermaelen

Wenger has made his first transfer swoop of the pre-season, signing cente-half Thomas Vermaelen for a reported £10m transfer fee from Dutch club Ajax.

After a season where Arsenal were clearly weak defensively, this is a wise signing. Thomas Vermaelen is a big strong left footed centre back with Champions League and international experience playing for Belgium.

Thomas is primarily a left-footed centre-back, but he is multi-functional and can also play at left-back.

"He is strong technically with a positive winner's attitude and I have no doubt his arrival will strengthen our team.

"Thomas Vermaelen will be a huge asset to Arsenal."

Carlos Tevez turns down Manchester United

Carlos Tevez has turned down a 5 year contract offer from Man Utd chief exec David Gill and will leave the Barclays Premier League champions going into the new football season.

It will be a fascinating start to the new season if the Argentinian pulls on a Manchester City jersey. He could potentially be the catalyst for the new era at Eastlands, Tevez would make Mark Hughes' job easier through his admirable work rate.

City are currently closing in on Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz, reportedly Hughes will sign the forward for £16.5m on Monday morning.

Football Transfer rumours June 2009

Transfer gossip June 2009

Ruud Van Nistelrooy (or Van Gol as his colleagues nicknamed him at Old Trafford) has been linked to a move to Harry Redknapp's Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton manager David Moyes is keen to move in on Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas. The special one Joes Mourinho had been linked with Jena in the last transfer window and Inter are keen to sign him still, along with Aston Villa showing some interest.

Tottenham midfielder David Bentley is rumoured to be eyeing up a move to Villa Park for a reported £7m. The ex Blackburn Rovers man said "I’m in talks with Villa at the moment.I really don’t want to say much more. But we’ll see what happens. I’m hopeful of sorting it out as soon as possible."

Both Liverpool and Spurs are following Stewart Downing's movements, with a fee rumoured to up to £12m....sounds like a lot of money for a player in a relegated Prem team?

Iceland ... Photo Diary

Iceland roadtrip - the words and riding

All through my life i have had a keen interest in geography.. well maybe not a keen interest but i understood the subject and it came easy so i followed it right through to degree level.. and not this human/political geography either.. no rubbish demographics i mean proper geography.. mountains and stuff:)

It is inevitable that if you study geography then at some point you will use a case study or some images from Iceland.. the place is crazy looking with its glaciers, volcanoes, mountains and vast pan flat lava fields stretching out to the sea... and its growing too.. this is an island moving forward ( well more sideways).. sitting on a boundary between two of the huge jigsaw pieces that make up the surface of the earth which are moving away from each other ( its a divergent plate margin.. i'm not a geek).

This 'active' landscape has been a place i wanted to visit for many years.. as a mountain biker it looked like nirvana with so much scope for riding.. the only downside to this great place is cost.. with little natural resource apart from the rising heat from the ground which provides free hot water and in turn power they are left with importing most of their goods and this in the past lead to them being pricey but along came a global economy crisis and with it the crashing of Icelands national economy leaving very many embarrased uk councils trying to extract their money from failing Icelandic banks but also leaving the average man on the street an opportunity...

I assume that Iceland is having a greater push to draw on its natural beauty and bring more tourism into the country as prices have come down.. and down alot.. the flight we booked from Manchester return cost only £153.. with the flight booked myself and Grace.. well Grace mostly .. okay Grace totally.. planned a roadtrip around the entire country hitting every tourist attraction we could.. shaving cost by camping and with that also taking most of our own food as we didn't want to chance that food was still a costly item.

Our Flight out was in the evening with a planned arrival at the first campsite in Reykjavik just before midnight.. at check in we discovered that although there was unlimited allowance on my bike bag in terms of weight.. no one item could weigh more than 32kg.. so we quickly repacked meaning i had to check in the tent and a wheel seperately.. al faith faith was placed in careful handling by airport staff to get my new wheel to Iceland safely.
As we flew north it began to get lighter!! very strange at first but expected as this far north and in the summer the experience only maybe 4-5 hours of darkness a night going down to 3 hours on the longest day.. in fact for the entire week we were there apart from our first night we never saw darkness.

Landing we wrestled all our gear to our hire car.. Toyota Yaris which was instantly adjusted to ''no back seat, maximum luggage room' mode.. and a bike bag.. 2 large rucksacks and some smaller bags were packed.

At this point i'm not gonna string out a wordy blog post about every day as it would be very lengthy. instead i'm gonna post a first on this blog.. a picture diary.. hopefully straight after writing this.
What i will write about is the ride i did when i was there... unfortunately it is singular.. although Iceland has the most potential for mountain biking they are not really utilising it to its fullest so don't expect any trail centres or waymarked trails... in fact i had given up all hope of riding with everytime of asking where i could ride at a tourist information point being a negative response... until we got to Myvatyn Lake.. the tourist info response was the same.. 'No these are only hiking trails' .. so i probed a little further being now desperate to ride... the sun was out and i had seen a big crater in the distance .. ' so its illegal to ride them???' .. ' not illegal.. just err... frowned upon' .. only frowned upon!! if only i had known this earlier.. i don't mind a bit of frowning.. hell we get that in the UK when we are on perfectly legal trails.

Quickly got changed and Grace settled in with a book... it was only a short route so maybe 2 hours of riding with the highlight being riding to the top of a crater.. we don't have too many craters in the UK so you gotta take your chance when you can..

The first section was awesome.. pretty flat flowing perfect singletrack.. through a lava field!! .. slightly sandy to very sandy but with so much to pop off and rail and the singlespeed was spinning out nicely.. felt so good to be on the bike and getting involved with this great landscape.. i didn't feel bad about riding this hiking trail as i kept well to the trail and to be fair its made from rock so erosion really can't be an issue.. i came across a group of volunteers maintaining the trail.. with hammers and chisels!! they were more confused than irate to see me riding it.

i expect i may have bagged the first singlespeed to summit this crater..

what a view point..

I rode a really nasty cross wind round the edge of the crater anti clockwise in anticipation of a great descent only to be let down.. the ascent skirted up and across the crater whereas the descent was straight down the side with a series of unrideably tight switch backs constructed from pegs and string.. oh well... from this i entered a volcanic 'sculpture park' loads of crazy little stacks and arches.. a climbers dream i would imagine.. this was more super tech singletrack almost trials in places but the dry rock providing so much grip you could really attack everything.. back onto the road and back to meet Grace.

What an amazing little loop... great scenery and awesome singletrack... so much potential and the man that taps into it will be very rich.

Ronaldo - £80m - who's got the best deal?

Ronaldo was the world football of the year, and has been instrumental in generating silverware for the Red Devils. This was perhaps the most predictable signing of the summer (other than Tevez going to Man City)

However £80m is a massive sum of cash...who has got the best of this one?

Shearer Weighs Up Options But Ashley Wants Out

Shearer Weighs Up Options But Ashley Wants Out

By Josh Allen - a big thanks to Josh!

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has confirmed his future could be resolved by the end of the week, amid claims that he is pricing himself out of a full-time deal.

Shearer has been in discussions with wantaway owner Mike Ashley since the end of the season but with Newcastle facing the prospect of Championship football, any financial demands may have to be re-evaluated.

Shearer is said to want a £3million annual salary and a transfer budget as high as £20million – figures that are perhaps unrealistic given the high price of relegation. Shearer has denied making any demands but in a statement released on Monday did say that there were: “obvious conditions”.

While money is undoubtedly important, job security could prove to be a more significant factor. With Mike Ashley set to leave as soon as he finds a buyer, Shearer could find his position under threat even before the season gets underway. His record of one win in eight games hardly makes for impressive reading and so if a new owner was to bring his own man in, Shearer could find himself on the managerial scrapheap at the tender age of 39.

Regardless of the Shearer deal, Ashley's time at Newcastle looks to be up. His reign has been catastrophic, even by his own account and not just on the pitch. Ashley bought the club in 2007 for £134.4million and has since invested another £200million. Despite putting the club up for sale during the season at £400million he received no concrete interest and is now set to accept bids as low as £80million – a huge loss by anyone's standards.

So for Ashley the game is up, his dream has become a nightmare in two short years. For the fans there remains some hope, hope that Shearer can drag the club back from the abyss. Whether he shares their belief will soon become apparent.
