Manchester United 2 – 1 Wolfsburg
Apoel Nicosia 0 – 1 Chelsea

As predicted, Wolfsburg really gave Man Utd a good run for their money but the home team came through it with goals from Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick. Text book away win for Chelsea with a one-nil victory with a goal from Nicolas Anelka.

Man Utd vs Wolfsburg
Apoel Nicosia vs Chelsea

The Champions League is now warming up nicely, Chelsea and Manchester United are in action tonight. I'll be tuning into the Man Utd game tonight who are at home tonight against Wolfsburg. Although you'd expect Sir Alex's boys to deal with the Bundesliga champions, on Manutd.com there was an interesting quote from the Wolfsburg:

"Old Trafford is a special ground and Manchester United is a very special club," he told his pre-match press conference. "They have played over 150 games in this competition and we have only had a couple.

"But we will not hide and I won't be losing any sleep thinking about it. It is impossible to say for certain whether the players will be inspired or afraid.

"But I do know we cannot afford to wait until Manchester United have scored four or five goals before we start to impose our own style on the match."

I fancy Manchester United this season for the League but not for this competition.

Chelsea have a tricky away match at Apoel Nicosia after their dissapointing defeat at Wigan on the weekend. They have a few injuries but should crush this opposition who will be looking to contain Anelka and Drogba by defending deeply. However I expect Chelsea to win and remain top of Champions League Group D.

Great Fundraising

A tradition that our program has had for quite a while is, "A Taste of Raider Nation", which is usually an end-of-year banquet for parents, players, and coaches are able to get together and enjoy a fine meal.

This year, the potluck-dinner was moved to a Sunday afternoon in the middle of the season. This was a good way to raise needed program funds and bring together families and athletes before the season ends (which is a GREAT idea). Everyone had plenty to eat and were treated to a photo slideshow and highlight reel of the season so far.

Among the many contributors, Raising Cane's of Louisiana provided a generous donation of food and supplies to this function and established a partnership for pre-game meals this season.

UEFA Champions League matches 29/09/2009

Arsenal v Olympiakos, Group H, 19:45 kick off

Fiorentina v Liverpool, Group E 19:45 kick off

In tonight's Champions League action Tuesday 29th September 2009 there 2 games featuring Premier League sides, both with tough qualifying group matches.

In Group H Arsene Wenger's Arsenal take on Olympiakos without Brazilian midfielder Denilson. Denilson made his last appearance for the Gunners on 12th September and since then has been sidelined for 2 months with a small fracture in his back. The injuJustify Fullry was sustained in their 4-3 defeat Eastlands and is no doubt a big loss to Arsene Wenger at this point in the season. A day after their one-nil win against Fulham, Nicklas Bendtner was involved in a minor car accident where he sustained some bruising also keeping him out of this match. Almunia is also out with a chest infection. One boost to the Gunners is getting England star Theo Walcott back after a recovering from a side strain injury.

Liverpool face Fiorentina away in Group E. The Reds are hoping to maintain their 100% in the Champions League Group E and have Spanish striker Fernando Torres in red hot form for this fixture. Liverpool are pretty much at full strength but Benitez will be without anchor man Mascherano (hamstring). Mascherano picked up the injury in training but will be hopeful to get fit for this Sunday's big clash against Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge. Also Benayoun picked up a dead leg against Hull. Fiorentina have no Alberto Gilardino upfront but have ex-Chelsea striker Mutu to lead the line. I wonder if the Saudi prince who has offered £350m for 50% of the Merseysde club will be tuning in...

I reckon Arsenal and Liverpool double, worth a cheeky mid-week flutter.

Manchester City 3 West Ham 1 Premier League result

Man City 3 West Ham United 1 Football Latest

Mark Hughes's Manchester City continued to give the Eastlands faithful something to cheer about with

Carlos Tevez opened the scoring after only 5 minutes, taking a Petrov pass and converting from six yards out with ease past England 'keeper Robert Green. Carlton Cole, who will be gunning for a World Cup spot probably behind Emile Heskey scored with a smart finish to equalise. Wright-Philips, also looking to impress constantly battered the left side of the West Ham defence but it was left footer Petrov that put City back in the lead with a well crafted curling free kick from just on the edge of the 'D'.

In the second half Man City continued to impress, with Bellamy, Wright-Philips and Tevez all looking sharp and hungry for success at the highest level. In the 60th minute Bellamy curled a great free kick into the danger zone for Tevez to head home his second goal to make it 3-1. City's tenacity pinned West Ham back continously in the second half. For the Hammers, Demanti was impressive when the visitors did get possession and pushed Given to make a good shot stop over his bar mid-way through the second half. However the home team remained strong balancing attacking football with maintaining possession. Gareth Barry nearly scored 12 minutes before the end with a fiercely struck left foot volley that Robert Green tipped over the bar neatly.

Cole and Demanti looked like Zola's best opportunity for a goal but must have been desperate for some joy as the Hammers are at the wrong end of the Prem at the moment.

Martin Petrov had a great chance to make it 4 with a right foot strike but sent it over showing how left sided he is. Santa Cruz came on with a couple of minutes to go to show Man City's strength in depth but the game was well wrapped up by then and Hughes will be looking forward now to pushing on from 5th position in the Premier League with one game in hand on Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Welcome to da Boot - Curious Calls

Now, I am the very LAST guy to ever complain, blame, or question officiating. It is a DIFFICULT and thankless job where your critics are many and those that know what you actually do are few.

I'm also the last guy to point to 'bad calls' for costing a team a game - teams should be able overcome one or two plays as a result of being human (nobody's perfect, especially in split-second decisions).

However, that being said, I would like to share some particularly delightful calls that have made dramatic impacts in the games they occurred in.

1. This first call occurred in Game 2. This would have put us up 14-7 going into the half. This is just a trips bunch sprint out, with a fade thrown to X. The call was holding on #21 (EMOL - Y). This was a 1st and 10 call.....making it 1st and 20, killing a drive that started on our 15.

2. This second call occurred in Game 4. During a crucial drive to start the 3rd quarter, on 3rd and 10 we run curls, attempting to hit #28 for the 1st down marker. Bang! We get it, but you'll see the umpire call a cut on the nose by our center a CHOP block. Our guard falls into the nose simply because he isn't very athletic, and contributes nothing to the 'block'. Converted down? Nope - 3rd and 25.

3. During this drive, a questionable call (IMO) and I'll let this go, but I figured this would go the other way (OPI). The F streaks up the field into the middle of the field.....the quarterback delivers the ball BEHIND the F who isn't in a place to make a play on the ball and is barely looking for the ball, however, our FS is reading the quarterback and is quick to jump the throw. Only thing is, the F plows right into him..... Notice where the ball lands incomplete (significantly behind the F). Notice the 'push-off' by the #2 receiver on the SS to gain separation on the Out.

4. After this drive, the opponent gets the ball and drives into the red zone. The back flinches and steps after a hard count by the quarterback, in plain view of the Umpire. Notice the Head Linesman wave ('hush') the coach on the sideline after going ballistic over the first movement from the back. Now, watch the back reset, and again flinch before the play (second)....still no call. However, this certainly doesn't stop the Umpire from making a call (from behind his back) on our MLB (#58) for unsportsmanlike conduct.

5. After a stalled red zone drive in the 3rd, we have the opponent backed up within their 5 yard line. After protection breaks down, the quarterback is forced to eat the ball - notice where he is at (on the goal line) as he is hit and his forward momentum stopped, he is IN the end zone. Safety, right? No........down at the 1. No problem, right? Just punt it and get great field position.....

6. The next play - punt. A flag is thrown for 6 men on the line (live ball foul), then as change of possession occurs, a dead ball foul occurs (#58 white on #37 black). Okay, so we get the ball back minus 15 yards, right? Nope......it becomes white ball, 1st and 10 from their 15.......

In all fairness, they DID call 'facemask' on this egregious violation, so I guess I should just count my blessings

Week 4: Parkway

Parkway 17 - HHS 7

Against a 2-high Panther defense, we were able to amass 281 yards passing (25/37) working smash, curls, and shallow. We're improving in our ball distribution with our H (6 for 63 yds), X (5 for 68 yards), Y (4 for 45 yards), F (3 for 6 yards), and Z (6 for 99 yards).

Our run game continues to be non-existent and has cost us on crucial downs, but our sloppy air raid IS moving the ball. However, unfortunately, our defense still struggles with killing drives ....namely stopping the run (opponent rushed for 163 yards on 43 attempts).

A few days at the coast - Knoydart Penninsula

Since being made redundant i have mostly just mooched about... looking for jobs.. discovering how little there is out there and contemplating how again i have managed to land myself in this position of uncertainty.

Riding has taken a back seat... primarily due to the disorganisation in my life.. living with Grace's parents.. trying to move to Newcastle.. trying to find a job and also as Kielder seemed to take a higher toll than i thought leaving me with a sore knee to rest up.

This lack of riding wasn't really an issue as anyone that finds themselves with spare time on their hands due to unemployment quickly realises when you wanna go do some riding all your riding friends are at work:(

So came about this trip.. after contacting the usual suspects looking for an out for a few days just to think about something fresh other than life Micheal (Rose) came good with a long weekend idea to a place in Scotland he had wanted to go to for a long time.. the Knoydart Penninsula.. one if not the remotest place in the UK... the destination town we were gonna be visiting, Inverie, is totally cut off from the main road network.. only accessible by walking/riding in or by ferry.

The trip idea was pretty straight forward... Friday night we would drive to Glenfinnin where we would dump the car and from that point carry everything we needed.. a short ride up the valley would see our first nights accommodation.. the Corry hully bothy.. the Saturday would be a ride to Inverie.. Sunday a walk up a mountain and Monday a short ride to catch the ferry.

Friday everything was loaded into a 55 litre borrowed rucksack from Micheal... tent strapped one side and sleeping mat the other.. this thing weighed at least 15kg.. riding was gonna be interesting. I drove to pick Micheal up and the third member of the group.. Ellie.. his whippet.. with no dog sitter available we were taking the dog, distances looked manageable and we knew the going was gonna be very much 'hike a bike' with maybe more hike than bike so she would easily be able to manage it.

The driving was shared and after consuming a large amount of wine gums and midget gems we arrived at Glenfinnin at midnight.. we quickly unloaded the car and dumped it at the train station hoping it would be safe there for 3 days..

After a short ride and trying to get used to riding with so much load on our backs we reached the bothy and Micheal took a look in to find one inhabitant, an American lady who didn't mind the rude awakening at what must of been 1am... we quietly got bags out and got onto the wooden bench to get some sleep.

The next morning we woke to clear skies and a promising day.. the scenery was fantastic...

After a coffee we got underway up the valley.. the days riding was basically set to be 3 passes.. the first starting straight off the bat and we were subjected to a good slog up the valley although the rough double track we were on allowed us to ride all but the steepest sections.. well Micheal used the granny ring and got up most. The top section was mostly pushing.

the ground as we go to the top of the first section was very boggy and although allowed some riding also allowed some comical falls.. when you have so much weight on your back its really difficult to get back up from a fall or drag yourself out of a deep section of bog... riding was very comical even if weather had started to turn to crap and we were getting wet.

We made it to the bottom of the pass and into a section of forest which luckily after a very short push opened into a lovely hard surface to ride.. the weather was getting worse so we decided to stop at the next bothy for some food and to dry the dog.. the bothy was nice and bike and allowed us to get bike in and all our gear out to try and dry it once we had got a fire going..

It was definitely a 'room with a view' looking out onto the hillside and valleys and we took the time to cook up some hot food.. at this point we had decided that to make it to Inverie today would be too much.. the going was very soft and slow so our aim became the Soulies bothy on the other side of the second pass located on a beach it looked to be a great spot to spend the night... happy we had time on our side we set to some noodles.. also time to ponder the switch on the wall labelled 'immersion heater - please turn off before leaving' for a few seconds we looked about for sign of hot water before realising how ridiculous we were being.

After lunch we stepped outside to a much better day the sun had come out and there was rainbow seemingly outside the door..

We set back off able to ride the double track till it eventually ran out and turned to singletrack... from here on we pushed and rode a little and picked our way up the pass.. although the path was not ride able in places the going was still good..

As we made our way the weather tested us with bouts of sunshine followed by battering squall's of rain... we finally reached the end of the pass and with only the descent ot go we were treated to some fantastic technical singletrack... unfortunately not as much was ride able as liked due to the hindering rucksack that every time you slid your weight back it would push you in the head and slide your helmet forward but all the same this was a hidden gem of a descent which i imagine as seen not many tyres in its time..

Getting to the bothy we weren't the first to arrive with a couple of walkers already in there.. luckily on seeing another approaching group of 4 they decided they would vacate and camp up the trail away only for the group of 4 to arrive and they were camping too so we got lucky with the whole bothy to ourselves. as the sun set the views along the loch and the shoreline were stunning... a couple kayaked in just as the sun was setting and it really appealed.. sea kayaking will get tried in the not too distant future.

That night we drunk little bottle of red wine while Micheal tried everyway under the sun to light some very 'green' wood... finally succeeding just as we had decided to go to sleep... i went to sleep on a double thick bed of my mat plus some foam i had found in the bothy intoxicated by plumes of wood smoke whilst Ellie had decided it was my turn to have her sleep at the bottom of my sleeping bag.. i have no idea how she can breath in there!

On the Sunday the day started on a very civilised note with pain au chocolat and coffee for breakfast followed by what could be viewed as a bad decision but now its all over i see it as laying down one of the hardest challenges of my life and opeing up some future trip possibilities.

Instead of simply going up and over the third pass to Inverie we decided to 'ride' the coastline... hug the coast.. ride the beaches we could find and hopefully get to see some wildlife hiding off the beaten track.. we set off on a rideable beach.. the day looked promising..

After a short while we were faced with a straight up a grassy rocky bank.. this should have signalled what was to come but optimistic we pressed on... then a shallow ish river crossing..

Once we had crossed the river another push up a grassy bank gave us some doubletrack to ride... this ran out at a jetty about 1.5km down the valley.. from this point we could only go straight up the steep valley till we could traverse across again.. prefered mode of travel was bikes on top of rucksacks..

From here on the going was the toughest ground i have ever tried to cross... we had calculated that we would have 3km of this hard going before it flattened... not only were we having to go up and down the valley sides but also inland to varying degrees as the outcrops of rock forced us inland.. the lovely ride able beaches we were hoping for just didn't materialise.

We did however get some wildlife.. firstly in the form of a group of basking seals on a rocky outcrop just of the shore... a few of which came close and popped up out the water as we went past on the beach to take a look at us.. then a Deer darted out of the bracken a few feet away.

The going continued to be hard.. if it wasn't 4ft high bracken clinging to your cranks and bars it was tussocks of grass making your bike 'endo' as you tried to push it meaning you were having to lift it over stuff.. eventually after a number of hours we got to a large flat area... a very large boggy flat area!

Micheal had opted to strip wheels off his bike and carry it on his rucksack... i was still wheeling mine.. crossing this bog was like a mine field.. on at least one occasion each we had to be helped out of a particularly deep section.

The reward for crossing this horrible place was a large ish stretch of rideable beach.. the gem we had been searching for.. if only it was all like this!!

No sooner had we smugly rode this section of beautiful coastline we were back up against it going up and down bracken covered hillsides... at one point we had to go straight up a very steep section.. probably only 20m but i was having to cling onto the grass with one hand and repeatedly throw my bike up the slope with the other.. at this point i thought i was beat... luckily myself and Micheal's high and low points didn't coincide so there was always the other person to give some encouragement... if i was on my own i would have curled up and waited for death to take me!

At this point we realised how totally committed we were to this endeavour... in mountain biking you don't generally get to feel this kind of exposure as you can ride to the nearest point of help in a relatively short space of time... but we weren't able to ride.. we were barely able to push at any great speed.. we weren't on any recognised trail or track so no one used this area.. we simply couldn't sit down and wait for someone to come and help.. totally committed to the route and the only way out of this was under your own steam... a sobering thought.

We pressed on and eventualy could drop to the rocky beachline and although it was not rideable and was uncomfortable to walk on the cobbles it was at least forward progress without constant traversing... we made a few more kilometres before we had to head briefly inland... at this point we could see Inverie on the other side of the bay.. painfully close... i was super thirsty as had lost one of my waterbottle son day one and had only stopped to boil up stream water once that day.

Our final real test came in the form of a 6ft high wire fence with half broken crossing poles... my bike got thrown over in frustration although i took more care passing Ellie to Micheal.. with a final rest to take on some more calories we were left with an easy shoreline push till a trail appeared which we rode complete with axle high salty water puddle till we got to the pub of Inverie.. the remotest in the UK... at the pub we ate well and i sunk 3 pints of cola and a magners.. and still could have drunk more while Ellie took well deserved rest on my Alpkit gilet/Dog bed..

No luxury of a bothy that night so out came the tent... we quickly pitched behind a wall and got in trying to sleep as the wind really had a good go at the tent and put it to the test...

Unluckily in the morning it was raining but with only a short ride to the ferry terminal life wasn't so bad..

I discovered my first and the trips only puncture... gave me something to do while we waited for the ferry.

The ferry crossing was very wet and windy and although indoors was available they operate a no dogs policy so we were literally left out in the cold.. Ellie tucked down inside Micheals jacket.

Arriving in Maillag there was only a train journey seperating us from the car... that train just happened to be a steam train.. a strange end to the Journey..

On reflection i rated this weekend tougher than any race i had ever done.. Micheal rated it tougher than the Matterhorn summit he recently did... so why am i sitting writing this now and i bet Micheal will be sitting reading this figuring out where we can go next and what changes we can make... insane?? certifiable!!!

Without a doubt the biggest match of the weekend is the Manchester derby this Sunday at 1.30pm. After the Adebayor scandal in their 4-2 visctory against Arsenal, Mark Hughes is a doing a great job of mixing it with the big boys and picking up maximum points but will be hoping his players use their heads in what is normally a supercharged Premier League derby atmosphere. Great London derby on Sunday too, Spurs will look to bounce back after their loss against the Red Devils when taking on Chelsea.

Tony Franklin Be Praised! First WIn!

Wahoo!

In an ugly performance, we achieve our first win.
With our junior quarterback (#16 E.Jones) returning, we racked up 323 yards (3 TDs) in an air assault against district powerhouse, Bossier, last night. Both #16 Jones and #8 Moseley attended the Darin Slack Camp in Texas this summer.

While struggling to run and effectively distribute the ball in the first two games, our offense was able to get in a groove getting our H (#5 J.Fobbs 10 for 106 yards, 2 TDs) , Z (#1 C.Willis 7 for 166 yards) and Y (#21 D.Ethridge 3 for 57 yards, 1 TD) significant touches. This is due in large part to 60 Out, 93 Rodeo/Lasso, 41/51 Fast, and 66 Smash (though we no longer use the terminology......).

In any event, a win is a win, and Tony Franklin System (reluctantly to some) provided desperate answers for our struggling run game.

Does Adebayor deserve to be charged by the FA?

Man City's £25m signing, Emmanuel Adebayor, played some amazing football in last Saturday's clash with his former club. However his skills on the ball were overshadowed by a totally inappropriate goal celebration and an alleged deliberate stamp on the head of his former team mate, Robin Van Persie. The FA have as a result charged Adebayor with improper and violent conduct.

Adebayor has until 6pm tomorrow to formally respond, but in post match interviews he has apologised for his goal celebration, claiming pure adrenalin led him to run the length of the pitch and celebrate in front of the away supporters, and has denied any intent to injure Van Persie. Is his apology enough? Even if you disbelieve his claim that his sprint to the Arsenal fans was not intentional, it is impossible to deny that he spent much of last season being derired by the Gooner supporters and his claims that these fans abused him and his family throughout Saturday's match are almost certainly true. However in my view, when you are paid tens of thousands of pounds a week, part of your job is not only to score goals, but also to be mindful of how your behaviour can influence supporters. Anyone who knows anything about football could predict that to celebrate in that way in front of the Arsenal fans would drive a number of idiots to start throwing missiles on the pitch, which is what happened and resulted in a steward being knocked unconscious and hospitalised. This mindless violence was not Adebayor's fault directly, but he and other footballers need to be made absolutely aware that they play a part in minimising the occasions which provoke the thugs who claim to be fans. Plus Adebayor owes some respect for the club which allowed him to make his name in the premiership.

Adebayor's alleged stamp on Van Persie certainly looks nasty from certain angles. Van Persie himself has issued a statement on Arsenal's website berating Adebayor for what he claims was a deliberate act of violence. The FA will no doubt be studying all angles before they make their judgement. I hope that this was an accident because Adebayor is undoubtedly a very talented player and it would be a shame if this sort of behaviour defines his career. Footballers are paid too much to be as stupid as some of the fans.

England v Croatia team latest 8 September 2009

Fabio Capello is holding his cards closely to his chest in terms of Wayne Rooney's striking partner going into the exciting World Cup qualifier tonight between England and Croatia. Emile Heskey has the physical, team player strengths and Defoe is simply on fire - who will he go for? I think he'll be prudent and go with Heskey to start with the option of playing Defoe for either the last 30 mins or even all of the second half if necessary.

The other tricky one is the right hand side of midfield. Using Beckham tactically as a dead ball super sub works, Theo Walcott is out with a back injury so will he go for Wright-Philips or Lennon to start?

Does it feel like 2 years ago that England lost to Croatia with Steve McClaren hanging his head in shame underneath his umbrella? For me it doesn't, I vividly remember the feeling of disbelief as we failed to qualify for the European Championships 2008 losing 2-3 to the Croats. Scott Carson did have a shocker but there were other more experienced players playing at new Wembley for England that night.

Now under Capello, England at qualifying level are a sturdier propoposition. To some degree, England laid the ghost to rest when beating Croatia 1-4 in Zagreb and are 4 points of the opposition going into this home fixture. We question whether they would be World Cup winning material but are assuming that we will be in South Africa because we are in pole position with the opportunity to book our place tonight at Wembley.

Croatia themselves are not in the best of positions and need the points making this a great little midweek international clash. If they lose and the Ukraine win they could be border line for World Cup qualification which would be a bit of a shock when looking at the group. Also without key Spurs players, Corluka and Modric England will really be looking to ruffle the Croatians. Their star player is definitely Eduardo and you could picture him popping up and bagging a goal just when least expected.

Potential England line up for this World Cup qualifier:

GK Green,
RBJohnson
CB Terry
CB Upson
LB Cole
RM Lennon
CM Lampard
CM Gerrard
LM Barry
CF Rooney

Snag Route: Noel Mazzone (NY Jets)

Wahoo, made it to my 100th post!
Now to cover my favorite subject....more quick passing game from a spacing concept, the Snag Route as taught by former NC State and NY Jets coach, Noel Mazzone.

2 Man Snag Concept
Although the same route as Gunter Brewer's 3-step Snag (that essentially is a strong side flat, snag, corner read, ala Coverdale Mesh), Mazzone introduces this as a 2-man game into the boundary. It features a standard mesh split or wider by X (7-8 yards), who's angle of departure is towards a depth of 6 yards of B gap (looks just like shallow cross, mesh, etc). Once the first inside backer crosses his face, he sticks his foot in the ground, spots up, and gets his eyes to the quarterback. Complimenting this spacing is the hot swing into the boundary by the back.

The back takes 3 hard steps parallel to the line of scrimmage (3 steps into the boundary, 5 steps into the field), and then down hill to the landmark of inside the edge of the numbers. He should catch the ball AT the line of scrimmage. The whole point is to stretch the WLB (curl-flat defender) as quickly as possible. The back is trying to out-leverage the OLB as quickly as he can. The explosive quickness of this play is what is important to train with your quarterback. He takes 3 quick steps and is thinking, "give the ball (on plant) to the back, hitch (hit the spot), open and move (hit #3)."
“it just a basketball game off the will backer….1 to 2, simple”
Mazzone cautions,"Don’t make the mistake of telling your quarterback to throw to the back (“I think Johnny was open in the flat. Why didn’t you throw to the back?”) as he’ll start doing what we DON’T want – hold the football." The entire concept is built in hot – for empty protection - it has answers for everything.
This is an efficient concept. This is a 1st down play, to me, this is like calling toss sweep or power. It is a high percentage play.
What problems does snag encounter? 1st problem – man 2nd problem – Cover 2 Versus man, snag just becomes an issue of running away from the defender, and /or turns it into a rub. In both Cover 2 or man, the quarterback can simply convert the snag routes into mesh – it fits with his reads and progression already. Additional Coaching Points against Man;
  • X - if X feels man coverage, he will run through the WLB's inside hip, making him bubble over the X and not come underneath (creates space for the back). With the snag, in the event of blitz, if everything voids, he is going to be hit on the move. Keep the X moving, don’t get him thinking. When in grass, stay in grass - Green grass means go

  • F – if they feel its man coverage, the QB will make a "bullet" call, which changes the hot swing to a bullet – this release is set right through the feet of the X (creates the rub on the WLB) at a severe angle towards the sideline.

Passing game is about spacing and timing It is important to keep the quarterback in a rhythm, to train guys to keep moving. The second hitch should be a throw on the move; plant, hitch, on the move. Coaches should move their quarterbacks into throws - don’t let him sit back there and get nervous. The third throw here should be “on the way out” (ala Steve Young), where he is in position to throw the third receiver or take off on a run (or throw it away). The third look should be drilled as a running throw. Additionally, you've gotta play fast, and you can’t ever question your QB’s decision.
  • If he doesn’t feel it on the hitch to the flare, go to snag

  • If he doesn’t feel it there throw it on the move, throw pivot

For the 3rd read receiver, he is to run a ‘punch and pivot’ route. This punch and pivot is aimed at the first inside backer he sees. This will likely be the MLB. The receiver should get close enough to the Mike to punch him. If the MLB gets aggressive (reroute) then he has to settle his feet in anticipation of contact, so he won't be able to recover and cover/run with the pivot. While at NC State, Phillip Rivers, for his career at NC State in the 2 man game was 88% for 8.2 yards per throw. Rivers was so adept at the Snag concept, that he campaigned Mazzone to run a mirrored version of this, a double snag with both backs flaring (this became what is known as Scat)
We ran it to open a game (vs UNC), to shut him up,
and show him his play doesn’t work…. We ran it, ran it again, then kept running it to show him it wasn't a good idea.... same formation, same play…..9 times in a row (UNC) 9/9 and on the 9th throw it was a TD.
3 Man Snag
Post safety (1-high) – work 2 man snag (weak) Split safety (2-high) – work 3 man snag (strong)

All this becomes is the snag concept with the third receiver added to the strong side. You add a route by Y, just like how Shallow and Mesh are packaged. Its still just 2 man snag, we’ve just added another element to it. With Cover 2, they have 5 underneath, not 4, so you should be looking to work strong, stretch horizontally, and blow the top off the coverage vertically.

Adding Y corner or Y basic (dig) to this 3 man package creates all the answers required.
  • If SLB sits on the snag, then you have the smash with the corner and shallow RB

  • If the MLB is covering the snag mostly, throw Basic ( dig)

  • If the OLB, Sam, is covering snag – throw corners

How do you protect your best plays?
You have to have something in to keep your bread-and-butter plays on the edge. You have to make the defense pay, to hurt them, if they (try to) take away your best plays.

(rocket screen develops just like snag / inside zone) This helps protect 2-man snag, 3-man snag, mesh patterns and inside zone because it all develops the same post-snap but stress the defense in an entirely different way.

Dealing with numbers in the box - How do you deal with it?
When you become effective running the ball or with this inside quick passing game, the defense will have to load the box with 8-9 defenders to stop you. To overcome defensive number superiority, you could gain an advantage with a running quarterback (zone read / fly) …..but what if you don’t want the QB to be a runner? You have TWO OPTIONS “look” and “stay” These concepts are just like throwing uncovered and are just as 'cheap'. LOOK If the cushion on the outside receiver is greater than 8 yards and the corner has outside leverage.....the receiver takes 1 step, right now, and GO! (to open grass)

This guy (Favre) really like to run them
We started calling it in the huddle…
we’d call “I-right 60 Power, X look”
But “this guy” just did it on his own whenever he wanted.
STAY
If the receiver is out-leveraged by the DB but has a significant cushion, he takes 1 step, and stays. This is just like a flash screen to the perimeter and works especially well in conjunction with the run game (shown here with inside zone action).
If they add to the box, we’re getting post safety….take advantage of matchups outside when they load the box.

roll that beautiful bean footage......

thats it. These are all the plays fit to be seen.......which essentially amount to plays where our opponent just screwed up. Hats off to the well-coached and deserving Marshall Mavericks.

The "good news" is, I will likely lose our best corner (#31) to a suspension and will lose our most (now) grittiest and hardest working corner (#24) due to a neck injury sustained in this game during a PAT block. He is doing well and I was real proud of the effort and hustle he showed the entire game.
