Arsenal crushed Wigan Athletic 4-0 with goals coming from four different player Mikel Arteta (28'), Thomas Vermaelen (29'), Gervinho (61') and the current premiership top scorer Robin Van Persie (78') who added his goals tally to 14. Manchester City commence their premier league title challenge with 4-0 victory over Swansea to be the only team to have won home game in opening round.
