Top ten scorers in Europe leagues in 2010 - 2011 ranked according to country coefficient comprises of 17 goals scorers. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid striker scored 40 goals and earned 80 golden shoe points according to league ranking on UEFA coefficients to win the Golden shoe award given by European Sports Magazines. UEFA coefficient of the league depends on perfomance of clubs in that league in UEFA competitions in previous five seasons. Goals scored in top five leagues (Premier league, La Liga, Serie A, League 1, Dutch Eredivisie) are multiplied by two, and those in other European league are multiplied by 1.5.

Golden shoe award went through 3 different eras.
1968-1991
It was given to any top scorer in European league regardless of toughness of the league. During this era Dudu Georgescu of Dinamo Bucharest in Romanian Divizia A scored 47, more that any other top scorers in this era.The ward was given by L'Équipe magazine.

1991-1996
The award giving was unofficial, by Adidas continued to provide the award. In this short era Zviad Endeladze of Margveti in Georgian Umaglesi Liga scored a 40, highest in this era.

1996-present
The European Sports Magazines have given the award basing on UEFA coefficients. Mário Jardel playing for Sporting CP in Portuguese Primeira Liga scored most goals, 42. Based on UEFA coefficient Cristiano Ronaldo scored 40 goals to earn 80 golden shoe points, more than any other top scorer so far. Cristiano Ronaldo also joined the list of top scorers who have won the award twice, others are Gerd Müller (Germany), Eusébio (Portugal)Dudu Georgescu (Romania, Fernando Gomes (Portugal) Ally McCoist (Scotland), Mário Jardel (Brazil), Thierry Henry (France), Diego Forlán (Uruguay), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
